A. The past perfect is used to show that one past event/action happened before another past event/action.

When she arrived, he had left.

He had left when she arrived.

By the time Sheyla arrived, everybody had arrived to class.

Before Magdiel finished the test last week, the time had finished.

After I had eaten, I drank a cup of tea.

The thief had gone before the police came.

Farid saw his scores last week because he had finished the test on time.

 

Jeff had lived (live) in Tarapoto before he lived (live) in Banda Shilcayo.

By the time Paola entered (enter) UPeU, Raul had opened (open) a business in Tarapoto.

Jeff learned (learn) to play basketball after he had learned (learn) to play soccer.

Because Jeff had loved (love) sports, he bought (buy) sports clothes.

 

 

B. It is used to express a past wish.

My grandmother wishes she had gone to school.

My friend didn’t pass his exam. He wishes he hadn’t wasted much time on social media.

 

C. We use the past perfect simple to show cause and effect.

She got a good mark because she had studied hard.

She was crying because someone had broken her favorite vase.

 

D. Past perfect simple is used in reported speech.

He said he had finished his work.

They told me that they had been to Turkey many times.

 


Vacation: Use one or two past perfect simple

 

After I had visited Iquitos, I went to Cuzco. It was a great trip. My family enjoyed the food and the great views. We took lots of pictures there.

 

I wish I had flown to Buenos Aires. I heard the city is like Paris. I would like to go some time in the future, not in the long future. I guess I will see the sea and restaurants. Hope I can also visit the Boca junior stadium.

 

I want to travel to Arequipa. I have heard the city is clean. I want to check if that is true. My friend John took pictures there at the main square. My friend Jessica visited Arequipa because she had heard about the food at Picanterias in Arequipa. I think I will enjoy the city as well.

 

My mom told me she had swum in Gocta waterfalls. It was long time ago. She traveled there with her friends from high school. She told me she had also eaten traditional food from Chachapoyas.

    In August I went to Amazonas with some friends. I stayed at my friend's house in downtown Chachapoyas and had a great time. For me, the most exciting thing was that my friend's mother made one of my favorite foods. We also did some nice walks in the villages around Luya. I got a bit sunburned on the streets, but otherwise enjoyed the cool weather, the food, and the beautiful scenery.

    Last year I went on vacation to Trujillo with my grandparents and my cousin, I had not traveled for a long time, I remember that the last time I traveled was in 2017.
    When we were there, we stayed at my aunt's house, there I had seen my two cousins ​​who 1 year ago I had not seen them.I remember that we had gone to Huanchaco and the beaches ; that afternoon we had bought a very delicious ceviche accompanied by chicharron of chicken and fish.Then we visited the main square and we took many photos, which I had later published on my social networks.We had also gone to the museum of the old toy, I really had a great time with my family, the dolls were somewhat scary but everything was fine.Of course we did more things in the time we were there, but this was it for now.
